Holiday Mug Rug Tutorial

How are your Christmas projects coming along?  Are you still looking for a few last minute gifts - maybe a quick handmade item for a teacher or favorite neighbor?  Today's tutorial would be the perfect thing!

Trisha has written a tutorial showing you how she created her Holiday Mug Rugs (on display at the store.)

Materials Needed:

1 Pack of Charm Squares- I used Blitzen by Basic Grey for Moda (or 5” square scraps)
Coordinating Thread
Batting remnants 5” squares *optional

This project is both quick and cute!

Step one- Opening the charm square is probably the hardest part for me, not because it’s physically impossible, but I just like to see them stacked together all nice and pretty! Anyone else have that problem? Anyhow, choose 5 squares that you like together, 1 for the back and 4 for the front. Put your favorite in the middle face up, and the four to each side; like shown in the photo. If you want to add the batting, do so now, underneath your middle square.

Step two through four- You’re going to fold the fabric from each side in half and place it on the middle square with the fold towards the center of the square and all the raw edges facing out. Pin at each corner.

Step Five- When all 4 squares are folded and pinned, Lift up the first fold and tuck in the fourth fold, like when closing a box. Pin again.

Step six-
Next I pin all 4 sides, just to make sure nothing slips as I sew. It’s optional. Sew all around the square, no need to leave an opening for turning, it’s in the middle!

Step seven-
Trim the corners and threads.  I trim quite a bit, to reduce the bulk at the corners.

Step eight-
Open the center folds and turn inside out, with a bone folder push out your corners. You have 5 layers of fabric, 6 if you choose batting; you want a nice creased corner. Top stitching is also optional.

Ta-da! You’re done! Simple, easy and oh so cute! A packet of charm squares will yield 8 mug rugs. Package with some packets of hot cocoa, maybe a new mug, and voila a great gift to give to neighbors or friends. Enjoy!

  3. Thanks for sharing, question nothing sewn in the middle. Will the coffee mugs catch on the loose material? Do we press them afterwards?

    1. There will be 3 layers of cloth so batting is not necessary but if you perfer you can add it at the beginning before pinning, you would place in under the middle square. Seems like the coffee mug would have to be very tiny to catch under the loose material. You can press if you perfer but not necessary.

  4. Love the mug coaster - I'm making these for stemmed wine glass coasters - just slip the stem inside the middle (better than wine glass charms!). Will also make the hubby and mother-in-law the iPad cover for Christmas. Thank you for the great ideas and tutorials!

  5. My Mennonite friends showed me a potholder made like this and I could not figure it out just by their explaining it with the finished product. Thank you for the great tutorial. The only thing I would add would be a thin piece of muslin on the table first, then the batting and then the center fabric. Better to have fabric (muslin) on the inside under the folded fabrics than just batting. Oh, and a hang loop in the corner. I was needing new potholders so am going to be making these now. Thank you!

    1. For a potholder, you almost need some insulbright (sp?) to help with the heat. I love this pattern, but do have a little trouble getting it all sewn and turned when I add the batting as well--makes it very thick.

    1. After reviewing the 2006 pattern, there are many changes in the two, this one seems much quicker and easier. The other is nice if you are using your own scrap and not the charm pack.

  7. I have seen these used as wine glass coasters - slip the base of the goblet in between the folds, and carry it around the room as you socialize. Voila - a coaster AND identification for your glass.

  8. I used a piece of vinyl instead of batting to help with moisture on glasses soaking through. Thank you for this pattern.

  9. I made several sets of these several years ago,i didn't put any batting in the ones i kept for me as i don't use a lot/any ice in my drinks. Also if you are using these for mug rugs for hot drinks,no batting is needed. These are so easy and make great little tuck in gifts.I plan to make more this year for gifts. To anonymous,no they will not catch on the folded areas. You can use these in the bathroom as well to put under the cans of sprays.

  10. I think they will be great gifts and stocking stuffers. Thanks for posting the instructions, they are just the encouragement I needed to make them.

  11. I made a quick sample costar using some scrap fabric. I chose to put a bit of batting underneath my center square. After stitching and turning the coaster out where the four edges come together in the center you can see the batting if you were to pull on the coaster. If you don't use Batting you would still see the underneath side of your middle fabric. Not sure this is ideal. Thoughts???

    1. Add a another square of fabric over the batting so it will be inside after being turned. I also inserted a smaller square of thin plastic after it was turned to make it water proof for sweating glasses.

      Delete
    2. You can use a solid colour for the middle square, or use another fabric instead of batting.

  12. There is a fusible vinyl that would be great to make these waterproof. I would however, cut it to 4.5 x 4.5, fuse it in the center of and on the side of the fabric that will become the inside, then start adding the folded pieces on top.

  13. My first one was really off kilter, so I'm glad I made one before making all 10 at once. You have to be careful that the squares match size wise. I ended up trimming some. I think I am math challenged, so I would agree that I'm part of the problem. My first three were small, my last two are really nice. I had found other mug rugs with asymmetrical folds and varied uses. I like this mobile stem glass coaster. I will finish the rest of them today. Definitely stock stuffers! Mahalo

  16. I did one as a test and love it! I will definitely be making sets and using batting.

  22. Friend uses these to place on the bottom of her wine glass..inserting it into the coaster so that it stays on when you lift or place the wine glass down. Very cute and keeps the wine glasses from potentially tipping when placed on a cushioned coaster.

  23. Rather than batting, consider making the base TWO pieces of fabric with wrong sides facing each other. The tabletop side fabric will be hidden inside once turned.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I just made my first one, I used denim for the bottom and the softer duck cloth in nautical colors for the other four pieces, also I measured mine 5" square, it came out great and just the right size, I love it and will definately make more. Thank you so much for shareing the pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I like that idea. So that the muslin not the batting would show if it gets turned inside out again.
